Guide to State Licensing

Printer-friendly version

  1. Print appropriate examination application information from your state licensing website. Click Here

  2. Fill out application and mail to your state licensing agency with the appropriate state application fee for eligibility determination. NOTE: Do NOT include the examination fee.

  3. Your state licensing agency will determine your eligibility for the exam for which you have applied. You will receive a letter from your state licensing agency informing you of your examination eligibility and instructions for paying your exam fee to ARRT if necessary.

  4. Your state licensing agency will enter your information into the STATERHC.ORG database. Each time you need to retake the examination, you must apply to your state licensing agency to be considered for a new examination eligibility. What is Eligibility Period? STATE ELIGIBILITY PERIOD
Your license/permit eligibility period is determined by your state licensing agency. You may attempt the exam three times within this eligibility period. You must contact your state licensing agency once this eligibility period has ended. Payment for examination must be received at the ARRT no later than 30 days before the end date of your eligibility period. This is to allow time for payment processing and examination scheduling. The exam must be completed before the end of your eligibility period.

    ARRT 90-DAY EXAMINATION WINDOW
You may schedule your exam appointment for any time during the ARRT-assigned 90-day examination window printed on the State Candidate Status Report. Examination windows begin on the Wednesday after payment is processed at the ARRT and extend for 90 calendar days. Please see Examination Handbook for details.

    4. Select a username and password, fill in other personal information and create your profile.

  6. Pay for your examination by credit card. (You may also pay with a cashier's check or money order, but you will need to mail your payment with a copy of your state Notice of Eligibility Letter to the ARRT. Personal and business checks are not acceptable and will be returned).

  7. Within approximately 7-10 business days, you’ll receive an email from ARRT informing you that your Candidate Status Report is available on your StateRHC.org Profile page. You’ll also receive a printed Candidate Status Report and a state licensing handbook from ARRT via U.S. mail.
